PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM - the
It was just a few years ago, when the first digital single-lens
reflex cameras capable of shooting video came out. A few years
later, this apparently insignificant additional feature turns out
to be an earthquake, a little revolution for the film and
photography sectors. As a matter of fact, the quality of the
video-image that can be achieved with a DSLR resembles much more
that of professional film cameras than that of professional
The reasons for this are twofold. On one hand, built-in DSLR
sensors are about 10 times bigger than the professional-videocamera
equivalent. On the other, DSLRs also benefit from a broader choice
of high-quality, light-sensitive lenses (coming from the
well-established market of photocameras) which cost a fraction of
the extremely expensive lenses for film- and video-cameras.
These two aspects, combined with adequate technical skills and
equipment, ensure very shallow depth of field, awesome sensibility
in low-light situations, vivid colors and an overall extremely
sharp, contrasty and noise-free digitaI image. Which, after a savvy
post-production, can achieve that typical film-look that only ten
times more expensive filmcameras can achieve.
As a result, the worlds of photography and film have gotten closer
to each other just like they were in the early days of cinema.
Shooting amazing looking pictures and videos with one single camera
(and on a budget), is nowadays a reality.
I belong to those filmmakers that embraced this revolution. Despite
audiovisual production being my main focus (see more at
www.corsini.tv), taking advantage of a carefully selected network
of professionals, I also conceive, develop and produce visual
communication campaigns that also encompass photography.
